Thrifty Ways - Raising Chickens and Fish for Food

photos - our last batch of chicks (2008)

I am so excited, I finally got my chickens ordered.
No one in my family wants to kill animals for meat. We want happy chickens
laying big brown double yolk eggs. The problem is that we still eat meat
and I feel we should take responsibility for raising (and butchering) our own meat.
If you are feeling squeamish you are not the only one!

We are trying an experiment. I have ordered a "FryPan Special" from a hatchery in
Lebanon, Missouri. It's a great deal, you get 25 heavy breed cockerels with a free bonus
of 5 exotic chicks. 30 chickens for $13. The shipping cost more than the chicks at $15.

Our local grain elevator sells 50 lb. bags of medicated chick starter for $10. per bag.
My son can ride the lawn mower up there to pick up bags as we need them.

I plan to raise them to the size of "Cornish Game Hens" then put them in the freezer.
The chicks in the photo grew into fat happy egg layers and still provide eggs for my
family down South.

You may think this is an odd time of year to order chicks, but we'll only be raising them for
7 or 8 weeks.

Next batch will be eggs layers.

Pheasant chick starter can be substituted for chicken food. If this experiment goes well I may
order a batch of Pheasant chicks.

Our 2nd experiment in home meat production begins this weekend.
We have hired our neighbor to dig a pond where I will begin my Aquaculture experiment.

Catfish are easy to grow and can survive bitter winters. I can grow enough fish to fill a large freezer
each year. I can also add a few ducks and geese for eggs. Cat Tails grow here
and they have several delicious edible parts, so they are "in" as well.

Chicken and Fish are very expensive in our local stores.
Wish me luck in my efforts to provide for my family.

I am just grateful for the chance to try.

Thrifty Ways - How to get a new Appliance Every Year

Kenmore Ultra SilverSteel™ 30" Freestanding Gas Range 7120

from Sears | Item: 02271208000 | Model: 7120
on sale -$399.88 (was $579.99)

I am still in the "experiment" stage of living without cable. (saves $40.+ per month
or $480. per year) I am learning that watching the same shows online, free
is much better than my old expensive cable.

The savings will buy a new appliance per year. Sears has dishwashers, clothes washers,
refrigerators and freezers in this price range. Sears delivers to rural areas and usually
has a rebate for home delivery of appliances.

My family does not use credit of any kind. Everything we have is paid for.
We don't work to pay interest on loans or credit cards and the bank can't take our house.

I use a prepaid Walmart Visa card and our checking account Visa card
to shop online. These cards are prepaid, so we only buy what we can afford.

I recommend that all of you get more creative with your household bills.
Small changes can pay off big!

Cable started out as a great way to watch TV with no commercials.
Now my favorite programs have so many commercials that I
don't enjoy watching them on cable.

Thank goodness these same channels are online with many free full episodes.
You can watch them online, free with no commercials, from any country.

Take your cable savings at the end of each year and buy Christmas presents
or one new appliance per year. Energy efficient appliances will get you a
hefty Tax credit, too!

You can live well without credit or cable.

Here is a great channel available to you all :
NATGEOTV.com from the National Geographic Channel

I fell asleep with it on and it played all night.
*no commercials
*auto plays the next show
*free
*wonderful

I watched the show "Lost Cities of the Amazon".
More shows:
Dog Whisperer
Birth of Jesus
In the Womb
Tiny Humans: The Hobbits of Flores
Female Suicide Bombers
Mystery of the Screaming Man (mummy)
Mixed Martial Arts
and did I say NO commercials?
CLICK HERE to pick your favorites and watch

To get the most out of online TV be sure to click the icon on
the bar at the bottom of the video or episode and watch shows in full screen.

Newer Flat Screens can be used like a monitor to watch your shows.
My DSL comes through a router that allows me to connect FOUR TV's via
computers and watch shows anywhere in the house!

What will you do with the money you save?

Thrifty Ways to Save on Cell Phone Bills

My husband is a Trucker so a cell phone is a must for him.
For the last few years we have used Sprint's "Simply Everything" plan.
It's listed at $99. per month but with taxes, fees, etc.
it cost us closer to $138. per month.

Recently we ditched Sprint and did two things that save us lots of moolah.

First I bought a Magic Jack. This gives me unlimited long distance from home:
I can call him.

Second we looked into Wal*Mart's new "Strait Talk" phones.
Strait Talk is great because the phones are inexpensive and there is no "plan"
or service contract. ($30 card or $45. card)
Just pick a card and apply it to your phone.

We picked this phone:
Straight Talk Prepaid LG 220C Phone
  • Bluetooth capability
  • Mobile Web services
  • Downloadable ringtones and graphics
  • Hands-free speaker
    Model#: NTLGS220CPWP
  • $39.98 with FREE SHIPPING TO HOME

  • There is a cheaper one ($29.98) Model#: NTLGS100CPWP
but you have to buy a separate phone charger so it's not
    really cheaper.

We chose the $45 card with nationwide coverage, unlimited minutes, data transfer,
    and text.

This saves us around $93. per month or $1,116. per year.
So our total phone bills are $20.month for the basic home phone,
$19.95 a YEAR for the Magic Jack
$45. month for the Strait Talk card

If My Internet Service didn't come through my local phone company,
I could get rid of $20. per month for basic home phone service but that is
the happy price I pay for living in the boonies!

I am so far out of the rat race, that the Post Office doesn't even deliver mail
    to our home!

I know how hard it is for Truckers to get affordable Nationwide coverage
so thought I'd better share this.

To our surprise, The Wally World phone gets BETTER reception than the
Sprint simply everthing and the Magic Jack
is clear as a bell, too.

I would love to hear your thrifty tips.

Magic Jack -If you have a kid in college, buy them one and save some bucks.
    Strait Talk

Tell me what you'll do with all the money you save.
I'm going to spend my extra $1,100. on a new side by side while the Kenmore's
are on sale at Sears. They deliver to the boonies. Today's the last day
for Free Delivery and Haul Away(of the old one).
That saves me $60. in gas driving to Fargo, and truck rental fees to drag
    the beast home!
