Thrifty Ways to Save on Cell Phone Bills

My husband is a Trucker so a cell phone is a must for him.
For the last few years we have used Sprint's "Simply Everything" plan.
It's listed at $99. per month but with taxes, fees, etc.
it cost us closer to $138. per month.

Recently we ditched Sprint and did two things that save us lots of moolah.

First I bought a Magic Jack. This gives me unlimited long distance from home:
I can call him.

Second we looked into Wal*Mart's new "Strait Talk" phones.
Strait Talk is great because the phones are inexpensive and there is no "plan"
or service contract. ($30 card or $45. card)
Just pick a card and apply it to your phone.

We picked this phone:
Straight Talk Prepaid LG 220C Phone
  • Bluetooth capability
  • Mobile Web services
  • Downloadable ringtones and graphics
  • Hands-free speaker
    Model#: NTLGS220CPWP
  • $39.98 with FREE SHIPPING TO HOME

  • There is a cheaper one ($29.98) Model#: NTLGS100CPWP
but you have to buy a separate phone charger so it's not
    really cheaper.

We chose the $45 card with nationwide coverage, unlimited minutes, data transfer,
    and text.

This saves us around $93. per month or $1,116. per year.
So our total phone bills are $20.month for the basic home phone,
$19.95 a YEAR for the Magic Jack
$45. month for the Strait Talk card

If My Internet Service didn't come through my local phone company,
I could get rid of $20. per month for basic home phone service but that is
the happy price I pay for living in the boonies!

I am so far out of the rat race, that the Post Office doesn't even deliver mail
    to our home!

I know how hard it is for Truckers to get affordable Nationwide coverage
so thought I'd better share this.

To our surprise, The Wally World phone gets BETTER reception than the
Sprint simply everthing and the Magic Jack
is clear as a bell, too.

I would love to hear your thrifty tips.

Magic Jack -If you have a kid in college, buy them one and save some bucks.
    Strait Talk

Tell me what you'll do with all the money you save.
I'm going to spend my extra $1,100. on a new side by side while the Kenmore's
are on sale at Sears. They deliver to the boonies. Today's the last day
for Free Delivery and Haul Away(of the old one).
That saves me $60. in gas driving to Fargo, and truck rental fees to drag
    the beast home!
